New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is sticking with the quarterback plan in place for Drake Maye regardless of popularity.
The rookie No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft saw extended action last Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. He went 6-of-11 passing for 49 yards. The North Carolina product also rushed for a touchdown, marking his first touchdown of his NFL career
New England will have their preseason finale on Sunday against the Washington Commanders. Maye could see more action on the field, but according to Mayo, the team isn’t deviating from their initial development plan.
“We came into the season, even right after we drafted Drake at [No.] 3, with a development plan,” Mayo said on “The Greg Hill Show.” “Sometimes I feel like, not that people are talking out of both sides of their mouths, but we talk about how he’s developed here during training camp, but then also why isn’t he playing.
“Like I said, we’re going to stick to the plan. It may not be a popular plan, but we’re doing what we think is right for the organization, not only in the near term but in the long term.”
Maye’s development will be important for the future of the Patriots’ organization.
This is an area that the team struggled in when Mac Jones was under center. Now, they have an opportunity for redemption with a new quarterback, head coach and regime in place.
They can’t afford to fail again.
