UNC football linebacker suffers broken hand

North Carolina’s defense saw an injury to a key player ahead of the season opener.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are just over two weeks away from the start of the 2024 college football season in Minnesota against the Gophers on August 29th. As preparation continues for Mack Brown’s team, the defense suffered an injury to a key player.

But it’s not expected to keep him out too long.

Per Adam Smith of Inside Carolina, starting middle linebacker Amare Campbell suffered a broken hand during practices:

He’s wearing a cast and didn’t participate in the Tar Heels’ training camp practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday. He isn’t expected to miss any games, though, and should return to practicing soon, per sources.

The good news is that Campbell isn’t expected to miss the season opener in Minnesota per Smith. With Campbell expected to be the starter at middle linebacker it would have been a huge hit to UNC’s defense.

The sophomore linebacker has been able to learn behind Cedric Gray and Power Echols, learning the position from two really good players. While Echols will be with Campbell as a fellow starter, the Tar Heels are hoping Campbell can help replace some production lost by Gray who is off to the NFL.

Let’s hope the report is true and we see Campbell out there as the starter in a few weeks.
