This epic sideline Matthew Judon moment shows his value to Patriots

This was incredible leadership on Matthew Judon’s end

New England Patriots edge rusher Matthew Judon wasn’t on the football field with the team in Thursday’s preseason opener, but he was coaching up his teammates on the sideline.

One camera, in particular, caught the four-time Pro Bowler engaged in a teaching moment with outside linebacker Oshane Ximines. It was a moment that showed why Judon is so valuable to the football team, even as they focus more on youth and rebuilding the roster.

There can still be a place for veteran players who can lead by example on and off the field. Judon could be that kind of player for the new-look Patriots team.

The Patriots and Judon are currently at a standstill with his contract, which is set to expire in 2025. It would be perfect if both sides could simply agree on an extension and put all of the business talk in the rearview.

But it would make even more sense for the Patriots to sweeten Judon’s current deal and come back to the negotiating table after the season. Establish some good faith and build a bridge towards a possible extension at a later date.

Judon could have easily picked up his ball and gone home, but he has already stated that he’ll stick it out and play out the final year of his contract. It isn’t like the Patriots are hurting for money, especially after their failed trade for San Francisco 49ers disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

If or when a reasonable deal is possible, they should get it done with Judon.
