At 8:25 in our recent Monday night USC show at The Voice of College Football, Matt and Tim discuss the decommitment of Dominick Kelly. Kelly is a four-star cornerback from the state of Florida who recently announced he was transferring to IMG Academy for his senior high school season. Monday afternoon he flipped his college commitment from USC to Georgia.
This is yet another commit from USC to then decommit from the program and announce a commitment to Georgia. Isaiah Gibson flipped from USC to UGA at the end of June. The Trojans are clearly having a problem retaining recruits, though we also have to admit that commitments in this day and age don’t mean what they used to mean. Commitments used to be binding and contain a certain degree of finality. Today, everyone understands that commitments are fleeting and that players are constantly looking for the next opportunity (which, we might add, is perfectly fine). The recruiting process could certainly stand to be reformed and revised in certain ways. All USC can do is keep trying, which it is doing as shown in the recruitments of Xavier Griffin and Joshua Holland in recent days.
