Kirk Ferentz confirms one-game suspension for Iowa WR Kaleb Brown following offseason arrest

Kirk Ferentz confirmed that Iowa football wide receiver Kaleb Brown will serve a one-game suspension following his OWI arrest.

Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed that junior Hawkeye wide receiver Kaleb Brown will serve a one-game suspension following his offseason OWI arrest in June.

That means that Brown will miss the Hawkeyes’ season opener on Aug. 31 versus Illinois State at 11 a.m. from Kinnick Stadium. Brown would be slated to return and make his season debut on Sept. 7 versus Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Series.

Ferentz discussed the decision to suspend Brown at Big Ten Media Days and how the Chicago product has responded to the punishment and since his arrest.

“He’s been good. My message to him has been very simply that what’s happened, happened. It’s unfortunate and we’ve had other guys through the years go through the same thing, but all that matters right now is how he responds, how he defines it and how he wants to answer it. It’s like a team losing a game. You can’t go back and change yesterday, so what are we going to do moving forward? So far, so good,” Ferentz said.

Ferentz said his message to Brown is to focus on having a good camp and avoiding any more future off-the-field issues.

“Just worry about playing this year, just worry about having a good August. We’ll take it from there. It’s over unless there’s a reason to bring it back up and I don’t anticipate that,” Ferentz said.

The 5-foot-10, 197 pound wide receiver transferred to Iowa last offseason from Ohio State. In his first season with the Hawkeyes, Brown played in 11 games and started four.

Brown tallied 22 receptions for 215 receiving yards and one touchdown last season. The Chicago native averaged 9.8 yards per catch.

Brown’s 215 receiving yards were the second-most last season for a Hawkeye receiver.
