Caleb Williams’ Bears contract was not entirely what he wanted

The Bears did not give Caleb Williams and his legal team everything they hoped for in contract negotiations.

Former USC Trojan and Chicago Bears No. 1 NFL draft pick Caleb Williams signed his rookie deal ahead of his first training camp. However, it appears he didn’t get everything he wanted as he transitions into the NFL.

The Bears declined Williams’ request to promise never to use the franchise tag on him, according to Pro Football Talk.

It’s not unheard of. Veteran stars, such as Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, have similar language in their contracts.

Williams is not your typical rookie in one specific way: He doesn’t have an NFLPA-certified agent, and has instead left negotiations to his attorneys.

By denying Williams this guarantee, the Bears retain leverage for 2028, when Caleb can become a restricted free agent, as well as the 2029 offseason, when he can hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.

The Bears do have a fifth-year option for Williams in 2028, giving Chicago options going forward.

Expectations for Williams are soaring, and many eyes will be watching his performance in practice and preseason games. HBO’s “Hard Knocks” will be capturing every moment during training camp with the Bears as well.

Cameras or not, the spotlight is very bright as it shines on Williams, the USC product Bears fans hope is their savior at quarterback for many years to come.
