The New York Liberty snapped Angel Reese’s double-double streak by quadruple-teaming her

The Liberty weren’t about to let Angel Reese score a garbage-time bucket to keep her record alive.

With just seconds left on the clock and trailing by 14 points, the Chicago Sky had little to play for in the waning moments of Saturday’s game at home against the New York Liberty.

At that point, the only real thing at stake was extending rookie Angel Reese’s record of consecutive games with a double-double. With less than 20 seconds to play, Reese had eight points and 16 rebounds, needing just one made basket to reach double figures in scoring and keep her streak alive.

So, when the Sky came down the floor for one final possession, Reese posted up a defender and called for the ball. She got it, but then was immediately surrounded by Liberty defenders. New York had the win, but wasn’t about to allow Reese to keep her record alive at their expense either.

Reese got triple-teamed, and a fourth Liberty defender – Sabrina Ionescu – loomed nearby. Reese was forced to pass out of it. She called for the ball once more, but never got it, and lowered her arms in disappointment as she walked off the floor.

So, Reese’s streak ends at 15 games after she shot 3-of-13 from the floor against the Liberty.

And New York – even playing without Breanna Stewart on Saturday – showed why it’s first in the WNBA standings.
