Does UNC have ground to make up in race for top center?

The UNC basketball program might have to beat out Kentucky to land this prized recruit.

It’s no secret that Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels are looking to add a big man for their 2025 recruiting class. And at the top of that list is four-star center Malachi Moreno.

The Kentucky native drew interest from North Carolina for months before the Tar Heels eventually offered him. Now, with UNC in pursuit, they are hoping to land him as one of the pieces in their 2025 class. But they apparently have some ground to make up in this race.

Among the teams involved in the recruitment is in-state blue blood Kentucky, under new head coach Mark Pope. The Wildcats are rumored to be the favorite to land Moreno and one recruiting social media account agrees.

HS Top Recruits posted earlier in the week that he believes Moreno lands with Kentucky:

The account isn’t run by a national recruiting analyst and the crystal ball prediction doesn’t hold as much weight as someone from 247Sports, but it’s noteworthy that the account has guessed 22 of 24 predictions right.

There are currently no crystal ball predictions on 247Sports for Moreno and his recruitment has been quiet of late. The Tar Heels do need to land a center and Moreno has become a priority for them.

But beating out Kentucky appears to be their toughest challenge in this recruitment.
