Spurs Chris Paul seen among 2024 NBA free agency winners for signing with San Antonio

CP3 leaving the Dubs for the Spurs was seen as a slam dunk.

It is not all that often that the San Antonio Spurs find themselves winners in any NBA free agency contest, but with rising star forward Victor Wembanyama on the team’s roster, those fortunes could be changing in a hurry. And the first evidence of this trend was the decision by veteran Golden State Warriors floor general Chris Paul electing to decamp from that team to join Wemby in San Antonio.

CP3 leaving the Dubs for the Spurs was seen as such a slam dunk in some corners that the move made Paul one of the league’s winners of 2024 free agency in the eyes of Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey. “This organization is famous for extending the careers and preserving the health of veterans like Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli,” writes Bailey.

“CP3 going there makes sense on that front, but this is more about his opportunity to play with another potential all-timer in … Wembanyama,” adds the B/R league analyst.

“The young Frenchman could’ve made an All-NBA team as early as 2024-25 with or without Paul, but CP3’s playmaking will surely make it easier,” he suggests. “For years, he’s created wide-open, at-the-basket opportunities for centers”.

“That alone should juice Wemby’s efficiency numbers. But his experience and leadership should help, too. Paul could’ve signed the minimum as a ring-chaser for some more experienced team, but this might ultimately be the smarter legacy play.”
