Many draft pundits believe that Colorado Buffaloes two-way superstar Travis Hunter will have to focus on one position when he makes it to the NFL. While I predict he’ll continue to play both cornerback and wide receiver, Hunter will likely prioritize defense.
Many before Hunter have taken a similar path, including Pro Football Hall of Famer and CU head coach Deion Sanders, in dominating on defense while getting spot duty on offense. However, lockdown corners aren’t often widely available in the draft. While wide receiver has become a premium position in modern offenses, those players can be found in later rounds.
Other NFL legends are chiming in on what Hunter will do in the NFL. A significant hurdle for him playing both ways full-time may be the teams looking to draft Hunter, at least according to longtime NFL cornerback Patrick Peterson. The eight-time Pro Bowler recently gave his thoughts on Hunter while appearing on “All Facts No Breaks.”
“(Hunter is) just a freak athlete. He is a guy that can (play on both sides of the ball),” Peterson said (h/t Fox Sports). “I don’t think an NFL team will allow him to do it, but if he continues to showcase value on both sides of the ball, I think he’ll probably have to be on a snap count. I don’t think it will be something feasible for him to do week in and week out, cause in the big leagues these hits hurt.”
Everyone knows that Hunter is an athletic freak, but asking Hunter to do in the NFL what he did in college is a tall task. He can do it, but I believe his NFL future is on the defensive side of the ball with occasional appearances on offense.
