Browns practice squad DE arrested for drunk driving after hitting building

The practice squader is in some hot water.

It’s the dead period of the offseason with no football activities, but the news is not dead in Northeast Ohio as Cleveland Browns practice squad defensive end Lonnie Phelps is in some hot water.

Players have gone their separate ways until training camp, and for Phelps, that means Key West, Florida. And all is not well for the former Kansas Jayhawk as he has been arrested for drunken driving and criminal damages after driving his car into a high-end restaurant while under the influence of alcohol.

According to the charge sheet, Phelps also refused to cooperate as he was unwilling to take a breathalyzer test. The damages to the restaurant are estimated at $300,000.

The owner of the restaurant added:

“Had it been opened… several people could have been seriously injured or killed. He said the front end of the SUV crashed into the restaurant after the vehicle drove over a sidewalk and missed a palm tree” (via Cleveland dot com).

The Browns have not commented on the situation yet.
