Mark Pope names Mikhail McLean as Kentucky basketball assistant coach

Mark Pope hires former Lamar assistant Mikhail McLean as the latest addition to the coaching staff.

Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope has named multiple assistant coaches so far, with Randy Towner and Nick Robinson being the latest. However, on Friday, Pope announced the fifth and final addition to the staff in the form of Mikhail McLean.

McLean was an assistant coach at Lamar, working for the father of current Wildcats assistant Alvin Brooks III. Before that, he was on the staff at Houston, and helped them rise to being one of college basketball’s best teams.

Pope had nothing but great things to say about his new assistant.

Mikhail played and coached under Kelvin Sampson who is one of the best, toughest and smartest coaches in the game. Mikhail’s work with The Bahamian National Team along with his college coaching experience has allowed him to become one of the hardest-working, detail-oriented and top skill development coaches in the country. I’m so excited to have him and his family join our staff, and for him to get to work with our team because he is going to make a massive impact on this program.

Kentucky had to start from scratch this offseason, and not only build a roster, but had to build a whole new coaching staff. The staff is now assembled, and it looks like a very good one. Fans will have to wait and see how the season goes, but getting quality coaches is a great start.
