The 2024 Copa América will include six group-stage tiebreakers for this summer’s tournament, which will be taking place in the United States from June 20 through July 14.

The four groups at this year’s Copa América will be sorted in traditional round-robin fashion: each team will play the other three sides in its group once, and the top two sides from each quartet will advance to the quarterfinals.

However, with such a small sample size, the prospect of multiple teams finishing their group-stage schedule level on points looms.

CONMEBOL has stuck with a traditional approach to breaking those ties, with goal difference likely to drive powerful teams to run up the score, while encouraging weaker sides to prioritize damage limitation when facing a tournament favorite.

Here are CONMEBOL’s official tiebreakers for the group stage at the 2024 Copa América:

  1. Greater goal difference in all group matches between teams tied for the position.
  2. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches between teams tied for the position.
  3. Head-to-head results in matches played in the group stage between the teams that are tied for the position, to be sorted in order of a) higher number of points in the matches in question, b) greater goal difference in the matches in question, c) higher number of goals scored in the matches in question.
  4. Fewest red cards.
  5. Fewest yellow cards.
  6. Random draw conducted by CONMEBOL.
