Washington’s depth took a hit on Tuesday, as safety/wide receiver Vincent Holmes reportedly entered the transfer portal for a second time to pursue his football ambitions elsewhere.
A four-star recruit who was ranked as the No. 11 athlete in the country in 2023 by 247Sports’ composite rankings, Holmes added depth at safety in 2023 under Kalen DeBoer. When DeBoer left for Alabama, Holmes briefly entered the portal before deciding to come back to the Huskies under new head coach Jedd Fisch. This spring, Holmes moved to wide receiver before moving back to safety for UW’s fifth practice on Thursday.
Holmes was in street clothes at Saturday’s spring practice and was following the safeties as they went through drills.
Primarily recruited by schools from the now former Pac-12 as a high schooler out of San Jacinto High School in California, Holmes would most likely land in the Mountain West if he’d like to stay on the West Coast.
His departure leaves the Huskies with seven scholarship wide receivers and just four scholarship safeties for the spring – Kamren Fabiculanan, Makell Esteen, Tristan Dunn, and early enrollee Peyton Waters. Washington is set to add three more safeties in the fall with Rahshawn Clark, Paul Mencke Jr., and Rahim Wright II.
