Head coach Deion Sanders has added another member to his Colorado football staff with significant NFL experience. George Hegamin, who played alongside Sanders with the Dallas Cowboys, joined Coach Prime’s staff earlier this week as CU’s director of leadership and engagement.
Hegamin owns quite the football resume. After spending seven years as an NFL offensive lineman, Hegamin later worked with the NFL Players Association and coached at high school football powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida.
Hegamin spoke with the media on Thursday about his goals at Colorado:
“The thing about our kids is most of them want to transition to be pros one day,” Hegamin said. “With that being said, there’s a whole lot more than just what you know on the field. The difference between a player and a pro is a pro is going to attack his plan (and) have a plan every single day. Because I’ve made that transition — high school to college, college to the pros, won a Super Bowl and transitioned out — I’m one of the better people to be able to do that.”
Hegamin brought proof as well, listing out a few of the names he’s helped mentor to the NFL:
“I’ve got 15 guys in the NFL — 10 first-round draft picks. I got Trent Williams.” Hegamin said. “(Alabama offensive tackle) JC Latham’s going to be a first-round draft pick this year. These are guys who I’ve helped mentor… I’m going to do the same thing here.”
