After getting their first SEC win of the season on Thursday against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Kentucky faced the Tide in a double-header on Saturday. The would split the game, giving the Cats the series win.
Game one
In game one, Alabama got in front early 4 – 0. Erin Coffel hit a three-run homerun for Kentucky to make it close, but the Tide plated five runs in the sixth to break it open.
Coffel’s homer was the bulk of the Wildcats offense, as the rest of the lineup was held in check. Meanwhile, Alabama scored nine runs on eleven hits versus Kentucky’s pitchers.
The Crimson Tide evened the series at a game piece, winning this one 9 – 4.
Game two
The series finale came on Saturday evening, and was a barn burner. Kentucky led 3 – 2 after four innings, but Alabama tied it in the seventh to send it to extra innings. In the eighth, Rylea Smith walked it off with a game-winning double and the Cats won 4 – 3.
Stephanie Schoonover was terrific for the Wildcats on the mound. She pitched all eight innings, and gave up just two earned runs. Erin Coffel had two hits and and RBI, while Karissa Hamilton drove in two runs.
Kentucky took two of three games from the 13th ranked Crimson Tide, and will next play Northern Kentucky on Wednesday before playing Texas A&M on the road next weekend.
