Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart announced on Monday that the Wildcats women’s basketball team coach Kyra Elzy had been relieved of her duties. Elzy had been the women’s basketball coach for the past four seasons, since November of 2020, when then coach Matthew Mitchell resigned.
Despite back to back seasons where they Wildcats have struggled, Elzy can be remembered for her team winning the 2022 SEC Tournament championship. Despite finishing seventh in the SEC regular season, they went on to beat the future NCAA champion South Carolina for the SEC Tournament championship.
Elzy had been on the Kentucky staff for eight years as an assistant coach before she became the head coach of the Wildcats. She was an assistant coach in 2008-09 and 2009-10 and the associate head coach in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2016-17 through 2019-20.
The Kentucky Wildcats will now begin their search for a new head coach. Ideally, they’ll fill the position sooner rather than later. Whoever fills the spot will look for a rebound next season.
