CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers have been very short-handed over the previous three games. While Joel Embiid, De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington have remained sidelined, the Sixers have been also without Tyrese Maxey due to a concussion.
Maxey suffered the concussion in a March 3 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He was sent home before a March 5 loss to the Brooklyn Nets and missed losses to the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Orleans Pelicans.
As the Sixers prepare for the New York Knicks on Sunday, one has to wonder about Maxey’s progress toward a return.
“He’s still in the protocol,” said coach Nick Nurse on Saturday at practice. “I mean, obviously, you guys see him out there. He’s going through the steps. I think there’s like five steps. He seems to be going well.”
Maxey must go through these steps to get him back on the floor. A concussion is, obviously, a very serious injury and the Sixers don’t want to rush anything in this situation. Philadelphia wants to wait and see how he can recover from everything.
“It’s wait and see,” Nurse finished. “I think again, like he’s making the steps. I think he should be good. Like I said, he looks good to me and he’s — from (VP of athlete care) Simon’s (Rice) reports, everything’s OK.”
The Sixers will begin a three-game road trip on Sunday against the Knicks.
