As the season begins to reach its conclusion, the San Antonio Spurs are picking up the pace a bit. They have been one of the worst teams in the league for the majority of the season, but with Victor Wembanyama getting used to the NBA, the Spurs have slowly been getting better and better.
Wembanyama is already one of the most talented players on the floor most nights, especially on defense, but his play on that side of the ball is getting even better. He’s been averaging over five blocks per game for the past couple of weeks, and it’s not a coincidence.
According to head coach Gregg Popovich, Wembanyama is learning more about his opponents as he plays against them more, meaning he’s able to match up with them more effectively. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)
“He is learning about who he is guarding because he has no idea who these guys are,” Popovich said. “You can watch them on film, but it doesn’t mean anything until you get out on the court with them, so that has been an education for him.”
As Wembanyama learns more and more about his opponents, his defense will only continue to improve.
