Despite the loss to James Madison on Sunday, national media outlets continue to view Arkansas as a top-3 baseball team.
Early Monday morning, D1Baseball released the first revision of its top-25 rankings. Compared to preseason rankings little changed after the first weekend, but one detail might catch Razorback fans’ eyes. Arkansas jumped from No. 3 to No.2, moving past Florida to take the spot.
Florida dropped its opening game against St. John’s 9-5 and never had a chance to redeem themselves, as the rest of the set was canceled because of bad weather. However, one team’s misfortune is another’s gain. LSU also jumped the Gators after going 3-0 this weekend.
Wake Forest stayed at No. 1 after making it through the first weekend unblemished. Although the Demon Deacons currently occupy the top spot, Arkansas has a chance to knock off Wake Forest as early as this weekend.
If the Hogs can take care of business today in game 4 against James Madison and sweep the Kubota College Baseball Series, Arkansas would have a great argument to be crowned the top team in college baseball.
Wake Forest could stay perfect this weekend, but it might not be enough. Its first test doesn’t come until next month. Currently, Wake Forest’s first ranked opponent is scheduled for March 8 against No. 12 Duke.
Arkansas will take on its first challenge of the season against 7th-ranked Oregon State this Friday, February 23, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
