Report: Steve Belichick accepts new role with college team

Steve Belichick has reportedly accepted a new job and role at the collegiate level

New England Patriots outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick accepted the position to become defensive coordinator at the University of Washington on Monday. This was reported by ESPN’s Field Yates

Belichick has spent the last 12 seasons with the Patriots. He officially started calling the defensive plays in 2019, before taking on the outside linebacker coaching position in 2020. There is some familiarity for Belichick in Washington.

He worked together with Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch in 2020, when Fisch was a quarterbacks coach for New England.

The Patriots defense has been one of the top units in football throughout most of Belichick’s tenure. One of their best years in recent memory came during the 2019 season, when they forced 38 turnovers and 25 interceptions. Stephon Gilmore was also named the Defensive Player of the Year that season.

With Steve Belichick officially moving on to another opportunity, it will be a changing of the guard for the Patriots, who will not have a Belichick on their sidelines for the first time in 24 years.
