New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt could have a “heavy hand” in who the next Patriots quarterback will be.
Van Pelt was hired by New England on Thursday. He has a history of working with quarterbacks, beginning in 2005 when he was a quarterbacks coach for the Frankfurt Galaxy. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2020-2023. He also doubled as the quarterbacks coach during his time in Cleveland.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport broke down what this means for New England on Friday.
“He is an excellent quarterback tutor, and the fact that he’s gonna have a heavy hand in the future franchise quarterback for the Patriots is very important in New England,” said Rapoport.

This is certainly a notable piece of information given that the Patriots have a chance to select a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
The development of the quarterback position will be crucial to Jerod Mayo’s tenure as head coach, as well as the direction of the franchise moving forward.
