Frontrunner has reportedly emerged for Patriots’ offensive coordinator job

The first finalist in the Patriots’ OC search has reportedly emerged

An underwhelming offensive coordinator search for the New England Patriots could be close to ending with Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley reportedly emerging as the frontrunner for the job.

The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan reported the news on Wednesday night.

Per Callahan, Caley is the “first finalist” for the the vacant offensive coordinator position in New England, which has exceeded 10 interviews with various candidates.

“So Nick Caley, I reported earlier tonight, is the first finalist for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator job,” said Callahan. “What it means is he is closer to either getting an offer or having one already than any of the other candidates. He came in for a second interview, Sunday into Monday. Where things stand now, he is closer to getting that job than anyone.”

The Patriots were one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL this season, and it will take a herculean effort to turn things around. They are still lacking in explosive playmakers at receiver and offensive line talent.

So they were never going to be the team with the most highly-coveted job on the market.

The good news is Caley has great familiarity with the organization and working alongside Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. He started initially with the Patriots as an offensive assistant in 2015 and worked his way up to tight ends coach through 2022.

After spending one year away with the Rams, he could be on the verge of a return for his first coordinator job as an NFL coach.
