Caitlin Clark named to a pair of prestigious midseason award watch lists

Accolades keep rolling in for the best women’s college basketball player. Caitlin Clark finds her name on two more midseason watch lists.

The award nominations just keep on coming in for Iowa point guard Caitlin Clark. The reigning winner of pretty much every postseason award under the sun for collegiate women’s basketball last year, Clark is once again primed to sweep up the accolades.

Recently placed on the watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award, an honor she is looking to achieve for the third straight year, Clark has been placed on two more watch lists as she chases NCAA history.

The Hawkeyes announced on Wednesday that Caitlin Clark is on the 2023-24 Wade Trophy Midseason Watch List.

She also has been named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top-20. Unsurprisingly, she is the reigning recipient of both awards.

The Wade Trophy, named after three–time national champion Delta State University coach Lily Margaret Wade, is annually presented to the best upper-class woman’s player in the NCAA.

Clark is looking to join a prestigious list of multi-time winners of the award that includes Nancy Lieberman, Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu.

The John R. Wooden Award is given annually to the most outstanding men’s and women’s college basketball players. Awarded by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, it is naturally named after legendary coach John Wooden. Last year, Clark became the second-ever Hawkeye, both male and female, to win the award alongside former big man Luka Garza. Only six women have won the award twice.

Clark is having a historic season even by her standards. She is rapidly approaching the all-time scoring record for women’s NCAA basketball, held by Kelsey Plum with a mark of 3,527. Clark is currently fourth on the all-time list at 3,389 points, just 14 points behind second place and Big Ten record holder Kelsey Mitchell ahead of the Hawkeyes’ clash against Northwestern tonight.
