When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, they picked a guy they looked at as a potential future of the franchise. So far this season, he’s proven to be as good as advertised despite the fact that they haven’t won a ton of games.
The Spurs recently moved Wembanyama to the center spot, and over the past two weeks, they’ve been more competitive than they’ve been all season. The rookie Frenchman has been the best shot-blocker in basketball while simultaneously leading the way for the Spurs on offense. He’s doing a bit of everything.
Wembanyama is a guy the Spurs can depend on for defense and offense, but they’re still growing. He recently spoke about the team’s experimentation with his role. (H/t Andrew Lopez of ESPN)
“I’m glad we can experience stuff and figure out my role. I’m a rookie,” Wembanyama said. “It’s also me figuring out how I want to play now but also for the future how we want to build. We’re still trying some stuff.”
Lopez wrote a feature that details Wembanyama’s acceptance of the center position, though he often acts as the point guard for the Spurs on the offensive end.
Wembanyama expanded upon his thoughts, noting that he’s always willing to try different things on the court.
“Experimenting in different areas of the game, it’s always something important and interesting to me,” Wembanyama said. “Every game is different, but we’re going to see and try until we find a good recipe.”
The Spurs are focused on developing their overall game with Wembanyama leading the way. That’s the top priority.
