Commanders take a different quarterback in new mock draft

A surprise for Washington in this new mock draft.

The Chicago Bears control the 2024 NFL draft. The Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft by virtue of their trade with the Carolina Panthers last year.

The biggest offseason question is what the Bears will do with incumbent quarterback Justin Fields. Fields just completed his third NFL season, and the Bears must decide not only if they will pick up his fifth-year option but also if he has done enough for them not to consider using the top overall pick on a quarterback for the second consecutive season.

Most mock drafts have the Bears selecting USC quarterback Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall, followed by the Washington Commanders taking North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 2.

In a new mock draft from The 33rd Team, Marcus Mosher sends LSU quarterback — and Heisman Trophy winner — Jayden Daniels to Washington at No. 2.

Surprise! Jayden Daniels is the second quarterback off the board, not Drake Maye.

Daniels had an incredible 2023 season — he was the most dynamic quarterback in all college football. The Washington Commanders desperately need someone to make them exciting again, and Daniels could certainly do that.

Mosher has Maye landing at No. 3 to the New England Patriots.

This would certainly be a surprise, but the draft process hasn’t even begun. So much depends on who Washington selects as a head coach. If it’s Ben Johnson, does he go the route of a more traditional pocket passer like Maye, go with the dual-threat Daniels, or would the Commanders move up to No. 1 to select Williams?
