In an exciting turn of events for the Miami Hurricanes football team on Thursday, the team has successfully wooed dynamic defensive end Elijah Alston, reuniting him with his former Marshall defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.
Alston, a formidable presence at 6-foot-2-inches and 256 pounds, initially seemed out of reach after committing to Texas A&M. However, the Hurricanes seized an opportunity when Alston reopened his recruitment. Despite not hosting Alston for a visit, Miami managed to swiftly secure his commitment, a significant achievement given their limited time and overcoming Alston not ever officially visiting UM.

The Hurricanes are set to return a formidable set of edge rushers, including the likes of Akheem Mesidor, Rueben Bain, Nyjalik Kelly, and the up-and-coming Jayden Wayne. The addition of Alston, an experienced and productive veteran, is a strategic move, especially considering the injuries that sidelined Mesidor and Kelly for much of the 2023 season.
Alston’s impact on the field is undeniable. During his time with the Thundering Herd, he racked up impressive stats with 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, earning a top pass-rushing grade of 90.9 from Pro Football Focus. His career at Marshall boasts 20 starts, 24 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks.
The Hurricanes’ aggressive approach in the transfer market has paid dividends. Alston’s arrival marks the seventh transfer for the team, with three of these bolstering the defensive line. This includes talents like NC State’s C.J. Clark and Middle Tennessee State’s Marley Cook. Additionally, Miami has secured commitments from Vanderbilt safety transfer Savion Riley, Albany quarterback Reese Poffenbarger, Arizona safety Isaiah Taylor, and Indiana center Zach Carpenter.
Alston’s journey to Miami is the type that fans have come to expect when it comes to Mario Cristobal’s relentless recruiting approach. Alston’s decision to join the Hurricanes, after considering offers from other high-profile programs, adds a significant boost to their defensive prowess.
As a versatile player with a history of no sacks in 2022 but a remarkable rebound last season, Alston brings experience, skill, and a proven track record to Miami. His performance, including 45 tackles, six sacks, and 11.5 tackles for loss, adds depth to a position already strengthened by the return of Mesidor and Kelly from injury and Bain’s outstanding freshman season.
This acquisition is a clear indication of Miami’s commitment to building a formidable defense, poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
