Commanders will pick No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL draft

It’s official. Washington holds the No. 2 overall pick.

Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, welcome to Washington.

With the Commanders’ 35-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18, Washington has clinched the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Heading into Sunday’s action, Washington, New England and Arizona were all 4-12. However, Arizona’s strength of schedule would keep them from picking No. 2 if all three teams lost. What the Commanders needed was either a New England (it didn’t happen), a Saints’ win, or the combination of the Raiders and Packers winning.

Fortunately for Washington, the Saints destroyed the Falcons, securing the second overall pick for the Commanders.

In a draft that is expected to have at least three quarterbacks land in the top 10, Williams and Maye are considered by most to be top-five picks. There is other elite talent in the 2024 NFL draft, such as Penn State left tackle Olu Fashanu and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., but by securing at least one of the top two picks, the Commanders are guaranteed to land at least one of the two elite quarterback prospects.

Owner Josh Harris is expected to move on from head coach Ron Rivera and the entire front office, kicking off a completely fresh start for Washington in 2024.
