Legendary Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ‘couldn’t be more proud’ of Derrick White

“When he first came, I don’t think he believed he belonged in the NBA,” said Popovich.

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been one of Derrick White‘s most fervent fans as the Colorado native has found a new level of success with his current ball club, the Boston Celtics. After Boston’s blowout win of San Antonio on New Year’s Eve, Popovich opened up about White and his growing role with the Celtics. “Couldn’t be more proud of a player,” said the Spurs coach via MassLive’s Souichi Terada.

“When he first came, I don’t think he believed he belonged in the NBA,” said Popovich. “To watch him develop through the years, started here with the G League.”

“Playing with us and then starting for us and then taking more steps in Boston has just been a thrill to watch,” he admitted. “He’s one of the greatest guys ever.”

“His confidence has just exploded,” shared the Spurs coach. “It’s been a process. He’s been in the league now, six, seven years, I’m not sure anymore.”

“But he’s a great story. And starting out at the bottom and believing in himself and doing the work necessary to get where he is now. Just thrilled for him.”
