Nick Nurse gives thoughts on Sixers signing Daryl Morey to extension

Nick Nurse gives his thoughts on the Philadelphia 76ers signing president Daryl Morey to an extension.

PHILADELPHIA — On Friday, the Philadelphia 76ers announced they had signed President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey to an extension that will keep him with the team through the 2027-28 season. Morey has a .635 winning percentage in his three seasons with the franchise.

While the Sixers have not been able to get to the conference final, they have had a great deal of success with Morey at the helm. Morey’s contract coincides with coach Nick Nurse who has substantial history with Morey dating to their days with the Houston Rockets.

“It’s good,” Nurse said of Morey’s extension. “I’m happy for him. Yeah. I’m happy for him. Obviously, you guys know we go way back and a big part of the reason I came here was Daryl. It wasn’t that smooth sailing right when we started this summer, right? Again, I just give him credit for always hanging in there.”

It certainly wasn’t smooth sailing. The Sixers endured the James Harden saga, but to Nurse’s point and Morey’s credit, they have recovered nicely from that drama. Morey obtained a number of great pieces from the Los Angeles Clippers in the Halloween deal.

“I think I got a lot of confidence, as do a lot of people including Josh (Harris) and everybody around here, that this guy knows how to get talent and put teams together,” Nurse continued. “I say that it’s good and I’m happy for him. I’m very happy for him.”

The fact the contracts of both Nurse and Morey are aligned is an important factor for the Sixers.

“It gives you both short and, long term is short term in this profession, but you know what I’m trying to say,” Nurse finished. “I think both of us are in a sense of urgency to max out this team this season right now, but I also think that it gives you the chance to kinda — I like to think in that mindset. Go day-to-day in that mindset, but I also like to build a program and develop and all those kinds of things, too. So I think it gives you a chance to do some of the latter as well.”
