Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez? Paul doesn’t believe the idea is farfetched.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer is a latecomer to the sport, with only eight fights against mostly MMA fighters. However, he’s convinced that the matchup will make sense at some point soon.
He compared a showdown with the Mexican superstar to Tyson Fury’s fight with MMA star Francis Ngannou.
Paul (7-1, 4 KOs) is scheduled to fight journeyman boxer Andre August (10-1-1, 5 KOs) on Friday in Orlando, Florida (DAZN).
“I think the path that I’m on now tees me up in the future to fight Canelo,” Paul told The MMA Hour. “It’s even just showing him that I can go 10 or 12 rounds with you, [that] I’ve done that with real, legitimate pro boxers and beat them.
“So when I beat these guys in the year or two to come, and continue to raise the level of opposition, I think me vs. Canelo becomes a really interesting fight and something that a lot of people would be like, ‘Oh, Jake’s going to get destroyed.’
“But there’s that fun thing in your mind, the same thing with Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury. ‘Yeah, but [Paul is] the bigger guy who has punching power!’ So it becomes this really fun, interesting fight that I think is historical.
“And Canelo has expressed interest [in fighting Paul] in interviews, so I think we’re closer than we think.”
How would Paul fare against the future Hall of Famer?
He has said repeatedly that he will become a world champion. And he figures he’ll have to go through Alvarez to get there.
“Yeah, this is just my road to world champion and I’ve said it since day one that I’m gonna be a world champion and fight in the biggest fights in the world and everyone’s gonna see that,” he told Fight Freaks Unite.
“And I’m gonna beat Canelo and all of these things. … Now it’s just me putting that into action, gaining the experience and it not being about the business side or the entertainment side.”
