The New Mexico Lobos went 4-8 this year under head coach Danny Gonzales in his fourth year. Despite that being the most wins under his tenure and the most since 2016 when Bob Davie went 9-4, it was not enough to keep his job.
Lobos athletics director Eddie Nuñez released a statement on moving on from Gonzales.
“After careful consideration, I have reached the conclusion that our football program needs new leadership,” said Nuñez. “I want to thank Danny for his service to the University of New Mexico. Danny helped bring stability to our football program during a difficult time and played a big role in fostering a positive culture throughout our Department of Athletics. He truly cares about the University of New Mexico and all of our programs, and we are grateful for the lasting impact he has had on the student-athletes on our campus. Coach Gonzales will always be a Lobo for Life.”
There was progress made under Gonzales but not enough. Who knows if the end of game situation against Utah State where New Mexico played it safe and not for the win and ultimately lost in double overtime.
Would five wins have been enough to keep Gonzales around?
The Lobos do have some talent and showed improvement this year and it was tangible in the win column.
Next up for Lobos is to find a new coach, once again, and Nuñez says he is going to do a national search to find a coach. This is one of the tougher jobs in college football due to its lack of historical success, not a lot of FBS talent in the state, and there are money constraints by being in the Mountain West.
The Lobos have competition for a new head coach as Boise State and San Diego State are open/ Plus, there could be another in Nevada moving on after two years of Ken Wilson.
