The North Carolina Tar Heels barely survived in their rivalry game against Duke on Saturday night, winning 47-45 in double overtime.
However, even with the win it’s clear that this defense is really struggling and that was the case again on Saturday. Facing off against a third-string quarterback, the Tar Heels are very lucky they didn’t lose this game and fall to 7-3 on the year.
The North Carolina defense blew a lead of 13-0 in the first half, then a 26-14 lead in the second half. They allowed the Duke offense to rack up over 200 yards on offense led by a third-string quarterback.
Still, even with that, the Tar Heels managed to take the lead again late in the game again thanks to Drake Maye. But once again, UNC gave up a touchdown as Duke scored on a 30-yard pass on 4th and 9 to take the lead.
On the play, the Tar Heels sent the house, leaving one-on-one coverage across the board with no safety help and it burned them. Without Maye and the offense bailing them out, this could have been even worse. And truthfully, the Tar Heels are lucky they got the win.
