Sixers star Tyrese Maxey discusses improvement at drawing fouls

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey discusses improved ability to get to the free-throw line at a higher rate.

DETROIT–Young Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is continuing to rise up the rankings in terms of being a star in the Eastern Conference. Through eight games to begin the 2023-24 season, Maxey is averaging 25.9 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 48% form the floor.

He is also getting to the free-throw line at a higher rate. He is getting to the line a career-high 5.0 times per game to begin the season. Maxey has constantly been able to find ways to get into the paint and draw contact even when times are trying their hardest to deter him and stop him, he has found a way to make it work.

After shooting 9-for-9 from the line in Friday’s 114-106 win over the Detroit Pistons, Maxey explained how he’s been able to draw fouls at a higher rate.

“I’m trying to draw contact and I’m going to the hole, so there’s gonna be a lot of contact in there,” he stated. “A couple of times, I should have just scored the ball instead of trying to get the contact, but it’s great. Me getting to line shows I’m being aggressive, and I just got to be aggressive for this team, and try to keep helping us win games.”

Maxey being aggressive is the key. Yes, he has to make sure Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris, and others get their touches, but he has to remain aggressive on the offensive end. An aggressive Maxey makes all the difference for Philadelphia and it allows them to run things smoothly on offense.
