USC women’s basketball clamps down on defense in comfortable win over FGCU

USC’s defense looked good. We’re obviously not talking about football.

The USC women’s basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 67-51 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night in the Galen Center.

JuJu Watkins scored 18 points in her home debut as a Trojan. She continued to play well following her amazing college debut on Monday against Ohio State, in which she scored 32 points. Rayah Marshall also scored 18 for USC, which led by 14 at halftime and by 20 after three quarters.

USC’s defense was solid against Florida Gulf Coast. The Trojans forced 20 turnovers and allowed only 17 made baskets. Only one FGCU player, Maddie Antenucci, scored more than six points all game long. The Eagles were just 6 of 22 on 3-point shots.

USC won this game by 16 points despite 4-of-19 3-point shooting. Role players hitting shots and helping Watkins and Marshall on offense is definitely something coach Lindsay Gottlieb will need to emphasize as the season goes forward. Building depth and more scoring options will raise this team’s ceiling.
