The Iowa Hawkeyes seem determined to test Vegas, oddsmakers, and bettors alike in their quest for the lowest total of all time. This week has set the bar lower than ever before.
The current total discussed in Hawkeyes Wire’s best bet sits at 28 total points. That would be the lowest combined total pre-kickoff since totals began getting tracked. It doesn’t appear to be moving, either. This game could be one for the ages.
Like many weeks before, taking the “under” on an Iowa game has been like stealing candy from a baby. Why stop if it works? That is the thought process that CBS Sports employs here as they put the Hawkeyes versus the Rutgers Scarlet Knights among their Week 11 best bets.
Rutgers at Iowa (O/U 28)
For the second week in a row, the opening total of the Iowa game opened below the Ferentz Line (30). Last week, bettors foolishly bet it higher. It opened at 29 this week, but the public is getting smarter and betting it down. Still, an Iowa game has not come within a touchdown of this total in a month. Pick: Under 28 – Jerry Palm, CBS Sports
There are no signs of life within the Iowa offense that show an offensive eruption is imminent and their defense only continues to improve. Pair that with a Rutgers team that has an upper-echelon defense with an offense nearly as poor as Iowa’s and you’ve got the makings for a game that will be lucky to combine for 24 total points, let alone 28.
Luckily, for Iowa, the score doesn’t matter to them as long as they end the day with one more than their opponent. They don’t care about style points. Kirk Ferentz and his squad only care about adding a notch to the win column.
