Nets’ Spencer Dinwiddie says young team is ‘still learning’ to close

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie said after Saturday’s loss to the Celtics that the Nets are still learning how to close tight games.

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie has been one of the more valuable players on Brooklyn’s roster due to his ability to fill multiple roles for this Nets roster. For one, he is one of the most experienced players on the team and has a lot of wisdom when it comes to what winning teams look like.

“I think we’re a group that’s still learning,” Dinwiddie said after putting up 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists in Saturday’s 124-114 loss to the Boston Celtics. Dinwiddie stepped in to be the primary ball-handler for the Nets after Ben Simmons was ruled out for Saturday’s game due to injury maintenance.

Throughout much of this season, Dinwiddie has had to play different roles from game to game depending on who is available for that particular game given all of Brooklyn’s injuries. “We’re down three starters and playing the best team in the league on a second night of a back-to-back,” Dinwiddie said. In addition to Simmons on Saturday, Brooklyn has had a fully-healthy roster for just the home opener on Oct. 25 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dinwiddie knows that the Nets are still a young team and that only time will help the team be better in games where one or two plays could determine the outcome. “Sometimes, closing and continuing to learn and we’ve been out to rely on Mikal and Cam (Thomas) to close for us. So, we just came a little bit short,” Dinwiddie explained.
