In his prime, Kevin Garnett was one of the most popular players in the NBA. A fierce competitive nature, elite two-way skillset, and outspoken personality endeared him to fans across the country. With that level of popularity, it was only a matter of time before sneaker brands began testing the waters for a potential partnership with the Boston Celtics legend.
In a recent episode of KG Certified, the 2008 champion revealed he turned down the opportunity to be the first player wearing Nike Shox. In the early 2000s, Shox were some of the most popular sneakers in the world. Yet, before Vince Carter put them on the map, Garnett told Nike he wasn’t a fan of the design. He wanted more cushion in the front and less spring in the back.
The offer came at the 2000 NBA All-Star event in Oakland. Garnett had attended a Nike event and stayed behind to view the sneaker. Of course, looking back, the decision was probably a bad one, given the popularity of the Shox range. Yet, Garnett has never been one to follow the crowd.
