CBS announcer Jim Nantz has spent decades broadcasting some of sports biggest games, so he knows that mistakes can happen behind the scenes in that production truck.
But he also knows how to make a brilliant save when those mistakes inevitably happen.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was questionable for much of the week in the concussion protocol, but he was ultimately cleared to play in Week 8’s game against the Bengals.
Purdy started the game and played the entire first half. But when the game returned from the break, CBS presented a quarterback comparisons graphic that had Sam Darnold as the Niners quarterback. In came Nantz with an excellent save.
"You might have seen that graphic right there. This is Halloween week, by the way. So Brock Purdy was dressed up as Sam Darnold right there in that graphic."

Well played, Jim. That’s how you cover for the crew in the production truck. I’m sure they appreciated that.
