49ers injury news: Brock Purdy in concussion protocol

Brock Purdy is in concussion protocol, so Sam Darnold could be starting for the #49ers on Sunday vs. the Bengals.

The 49ers got some bad injury news ahead of practice Wednesday. Quarterback Brock Purdy is in concussion protocol according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy won’t participate in Wednesday’s session and his status for Sunday against the Bengals is in question. Backup QB Sam Darnold will take over the starting role while Purdy progresses through the protocol.

It’s unclear when Purdy sustained the head injury, but there wasn’t any word on it until Shanahan spoke with reporters Wednesday. Shanahan said Purdy started feeling symptoms on the team’s flight back from Minnesota. He also said there’s a chance the starting QB clears protocol by Sunday’s game.

Left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are also while nursing injuries. Samuel has already been ruled out for Week 8 with a shoulder issue. Williams is nursing an ankle injury that forced him to miss Week 7. His status for Sunday is in question as well.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw got a veteran’s day off per Shanahan. Greenlaw has been dealing with injuries throughout the season so an additional rest day makes sense.
