Need we say more about how embarrassing – and deflating – UNC’s home loss to UVA was on Saturday?
The Tar Heels were a 20-point favorite against the formerly 1-win Cavaliers. Carolina was playing some of its best football entering the rivalry matchup, scoring 31 points in each of its first six games. Drake Maye was coming off his first 4-touchdown game of the year, while Omarion Hampton nearly broke 200 yards against a stout Miami run defense.
Carolina’s defense regressed back to its 2022 form, while the offense only scored one second-half touchdown.
Up next is no gimme, as the Tar Heels travel down to Atlanta for an 8 p.m. clash with Georgia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Yellow Jackets have just three wins this year, but own the all-time series against UNC (32-22-3), including an upset in Chapel Hill last year.
Georgia Tech is a tough team to figure out this year. It throttled Wake Forest by two touchdowns in Winston-Salem, then upset Miami in Hard Rock Stadium, but lost at home to then-1-win Bowling Green and Boston College.
UNC is undoubtedly angry after its first loss, which all but ended its College Football Playoff hopes. Expect to see a much different Tar Heel squad on Saturday, but also don’t be shocked if the Yellow Jackets win.
