Going into the 2023-24 college basketball season the North Carolina Tar Heels are seeing a lot of turnover on the roster. They lost several players to the transfer portal and had to add more that route.
UNC will have three new starters to begin the year with only Armando Bacot and R.J. Davis returning. And while Bacot is receiving a lot of the preseason praise early on, head coach Hubert Davis is high on R.J. Davis and where he’s improved the most.
While appearing on Jon Rothstein’s “College Hoops Today” podcast Monday, Davis was asked about where the point guard has gotten better this offseason.
His answer? Leadership.
“He’s consistently throughout his career has been one of the better guards in the country,” Davis said. “I think the growth for him has been in terms of his leadership. In R.J.’s career, he’s seen the highest of highs in this program and rainy and windy days here as well. So he has a great perspective in terms of leadership and what it takes for preparation, practice, the manner in which we need to play at the level in order for us to be successful. Him being a senior, his leadership has been unbelievable in a great way. That’s the growth that I’ve really seen in him, is his leadership and his ability to gather his teammates and get them all on the same page for what we are trying to do on the floor.”
That’s certainly great news for UNC fans, especially with Davis being one of those two starters coming back.
As Davis mentioned that Bacot needs to be dominant for the Tar Heels to be successful, it’s also very important for Davis to be a leader as well.
