Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had his weekly Zoom conference call Sunday night following the Tigers’ 28-20 double overtime loss to Miami, and Swinney was asked an interesting question about starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.
Things have not been going well for the Tigers offense, leading to a question on whether there’s any consideration of benching Klubnik as he has had turnover issues, and his situational awareness has been lacking. According to Swinney, this has not been a consideration, as Klubnik gives this team the best chance to win.
“No. Cade gives us the best chance to win,” Swinney said. “We really believe that. I mean, he made some amazing plays, and his good is really, really good; we just gotta grow through some growing pains with him. I really think he’s going to be a great one, and he made, like I said, some big-time plays. But just definitely some miscues as well. So, gotta just kind of grow through it with him right now. That’s where we are. but we feel he gives us the best chance.”
Through seven games this season, Klubnik has completed 63.5% of his passes for 1,684 yards, 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His biggest issue has been fumbles, which he has done eight times this season.
The sophomore quarterback has flashed signs of greatness, but with the good has been a lot of bad. He will look to get back on track in Week 9 on the road against NC State.
