The North Carolina Tar Heels received some surprising news in the summer when guard Simeon Wilcher opted to decommit from the program and then flip to St. John’s a few days later.
The timing was interesting as UNC received a reclass from guard Elliot Cadeau. It also came right when Wilcher was supposed to be on campus to start the summer session.
With Wilcher now at St. John’s, the recruit and his father, Sergio, decided to talk about why they opted to flip. While at St. John’s media day, Wilcher talked to Adam Zagoria of NJ Advance Media about his decision.
And he made it known that it had nothing to do with Cadeau reclassifying.
“It’s nothing about Elliot,” Wilcher told NJ Advance Media during St. John’s media day on Tuesday. “That’s the whole thing that people don’t get, it’s nothing about Elliot, literally. Elliot’s my guy, it’s nothing about him.
“It’s other things that just weren’t right so I had to do what I had to do for the betterment of myself.”
Wilcher’s father went on to say that it had to do with Rick Pitino, the head coach of St. John’s:
“It’s more about playing for Rick ‘f–king” Pitino,” Sergio Wilcher, Simeon’s father, said in a phone interview. “It was Rick Pitino winning 7 out of 10 games he lined up to play.”
The Hall of Fame coach took over the program this year and is hoping to find success right away. He has found success on the recruiting trail, including a flip from Wilcher who is a New Jersey native.
