Longest active high school football winning streak ends at 57 games

Andale High School’s high school football winning streak, the longest active in nation, came to an end with a loss to Cheney this weekend.

For the first time in nearly five years, the Andale High School (Kan.) football team went home without the W.

The 36-30 overtime loss to Cheney (Kan.) on Friday was the Indians’ first loss since No. 16, 2018, another tight game — a 21-19 semifinal contest against Pratt (Kan.).

From there, the Indians went undefeated over an entire high school cycle for a four-year student, winning 57 consecutive games over four seasons and six games before running into the Cheney Cardinals. Andale won four straight Class 3A championships.

Friday looked like it was going to be another cakewalk for the Indians, who led 22-0 before Cheney scored 22 points of its own unanswered to tie it in the fourth quarter. The Indians re-took the lead, but Cheney tied it and sent the game to overtime. Andale did not score on its only overtime possession, allowing the Cardinals to walk it off.

With that, the longest active high school football winning streak has come to an end. Here are some crazy stats over the 57-game run:

  • Andale allowed only 63 points in 2022, according to KWCH. That was only a slight increase from 2021, in which they allowed 68 points, per MaxPreps.
  • Andale outscored opponents 2,642-309 from 2019-22, according to the Wichita Eagle.

  • That’s an average winning margin of 45.7 points per game.
  • Over the first five games this season, the Indians’ lowest points output was 64. In the others, they scored 75, 73, 74 and 85. The sixth game of the season was a 28-7 victory.
  • The senior class (excluding transfers) had never lost a game before Friday

While the losing streak has ended, the season sure has not. Andale is still in contention for another championship. If they end up running into Cheney again in the playoffs … well, the Indians will know not to rest on their laurels if they go up by three touchdowns.

The all-time longest Kansas high school football winning streak was 79 games, set by Smith Center from 2004-2009. The new active longest winning streak in the United States is John Milledge Academy (Ga.), at 56 wins.
