The talk all offseason surrounding NFL draft prospects was that quarterback Caleb Williams was the likely favorite to be the top quarterback and No. 1 overall pick in 2024 with Drake Maye right behind him. That appears to still be the case as the season is hitting Week 7 and there’s a lot of football left.
But one draft analyst has a slightly different opinion.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler was asked about how close Maye and Williams really are in terms of prospects. His answer? The gap is ‘razor-thin.”
Here is what Brugler had to say when asked about it on X just this past week:
It's always been a 1a and 1b type of situation in my eyes with Drake Maye and Caleb Williams. The gap is razor-thin.
The 2024 NFL Draft is the Caleb/Drake sweepstakes. https://t.co/hSCmEriv8t

The response was from a clip Brugler posted of Maye during the Syracuse game, showing his skillset. The general consensus for the two quarterbacks is that Williams is ahead and is considered a ‘generational’ prospect with Maye right there as well.
There’s still a lot of football to be played this season and things can change in evaluations. But it’s something that will be heavily discussed for months to come.
