When a tight end comes into the NFL, a learning curve is expected. The NFL usually asks for more blocking than receiving assignments and they can be buried on a depth chart. Sam LaPorta entered the NFL with a complete skill set, thanks to the unofficial Tight End at the University of Iowa, and he was able to play more right away.
He is trusted to block well, which he does, but he also is proving to be a safety valve and weapon on the offense for Ben Johnson and Jared Goff.
LaPorta has been used in a variety of ways on offense and he has also played a big part in sealing the edges of the defensive line for run and pass blocking. Statistically, LaPorta is also showing out and is on some record paces. Some big games could earn some records so look at what type of start he is on for his NFL career.
