The Kansas City Chiefs are battling for consistency on offense, with efficiency decreasing compared to last season. They currently sport a good record through four games but are self-aware that plenty of things need to be worked on if they want to make another run at a Super Bowl title.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off of a rough performance on Sunday night against the Jets. The reigning MVP tossed two interceptions and was critical of his play in the post-game press conference. Mahomes approached Wednesday’s conversation with reporters with the same focused mindset on getting better to help the team move forward.

“Yeah, I mean, I just didn’t play very well, it happens — two of the interceptions, just under through five to 10 yards, and I missed some opportunities throughout the game.” said Mahomes, “And so it’s got to put us in better positions and make them better decisions. So that guys can go out there and work for me and make plays down the field.”

Mahomes holds himself to a high standard for understandable reasons, as he just became the fastest quarterback to 200 career touchdown passes in last Sunday’s victory.

“It’s something that I have to continue to get better and better at throughout my career,” Mahomes explained. “I mean, sometimes when stuff maybe not going as well. Or if I want to get kind of that deep shot going, I’ll try to force it. Whereas there’s just times where I got to just throw the ball away or take the check down. It goes against my nature, but it’s something that had to do with this quarterback position in order to have success.

“Obviously, I made two throws in the game; really three throws, you count the one to MVS (Marquez Valdes-Scantling) on the third long; I really got greedy and tried to kind of throw it down the field instead of just taking the underneath stuff. And that’s just stuff I have to manage because I want to still have that aggressive nature, but at the same time, take what’s there.”

Mahomes also passed Alex Smith for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in Chiefs history.
