A former Nebraska quarterback helped lead his team to an overtime comeback victory on Thursday night. Logan Smothers and Jacksonville State defeated Sam Houston 35-28 from Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
Smothers was 16/28 passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 12 carries for 37 yards and one touchdown.
With the victory, the Gamecocks improved to 4-1 on the season. Sam Houston falls to 0-4.
Jax State is led by former West Virginia and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. The program is ineligible for postseason play this season due to its transition from FCS to FBS.
Smothers played for Nebraska from 2020 to 2022 and appeared in 11 games. He would throw for 690 yards and two TDs with one INT while adding 161 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
