The Chicago Bears remain without a defensive coordinator following the resignation of Alan Williams last Wednesday.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has called defensive plays for the last two weeks in Williams’ absence. While many wondered if Eberflus would promote from within, he made it clear he’ll be calling plays on defense for the remainder of the season.
“We’ve talked about different things,” Eberflus said, “but that’s the plan right now.”
Chicago’s defense has been abysmal through the first three weeks of the season — and they might just be the worst in the league. They’re allowing 35.3 points per game (31st in NFL), 407.3 yards per game (29th), 285.7 passing yards per game (29th), 121.7 rushing yards per game (19th), 60% third down conversions (32nd), two takeaways (T-21st) and have totaled one sack (32nd).
Not to mention, the defense has been ravaged by injuries, most notably in the secondary. Cornerback Kyler Gordon is on injured reserve, safety Eddie Jackson missed last week’s game with a foot injury and cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson, as well as safety Jaquan Brisker, suffered injuries in last week’s game.
The good news is the Bears will face a winless Denver Broncos team this week at Soldier Field. We’ll see if a potentially short-handed defense — and Eberflus — will be able to make plays and give Chicago a chance to break their 13-game losing streak.
